Pasinggatan Festival

Pasinggat “luster”

The name of Taytay’s Pasinggatan Festival was derived from the Cuyonon word singgat, which translates to “luster”. It represents the radiance and brilliance of the “Estrella Del Norte” or the Star of the North of Palawan – Taytay, Palawan located in the northern part of Palawan Island. This star is not only a physical symbol but more importantly a cultural representation of the undying spirit of the people of Taytay, the first capital of Palawan and a town that was founded 400 years ago that has survived and emerged from the challenges of time, beginning from the moment of Spanish colonization, American rule, and the Japanese occupation.

It is also a tribute to Taytay’s distinction as the world’s largest producer of golden South Sea pearls – the Philippine National Gem – which is cultured in the pristine waters of Taytay. Truly, Taytay’s luster is best characterized by its status as the “Golden South Sea Pearl Capital of the World”.

The Pasinggatan Festival, which is celebrated annually from March 15 to May 4, is a lively and colorful event that showcases the rich culture and heritage of Taytay as a town. It is also a celebration that binds the community of Taytay as a strong-willed, peace-loving, and festive people. Despite their cultural diversity, the Taytayanos have managed to set aside their differences and instead use these as a rallying point to make Taytay shine and show its luster to the world.

During the festival, the town comes alive with vibrant parades, street dances, music, and other cultural performances. Local artisans showcase their crafts, and visitors can sample a variety of traditional and oriental fusion dishes and delicacies. The festival also features sports competitions, games, and other activities that promote the spirit of community and camaraderie.
The festival is a testament to the town’s resolve to always celebrate its rich cultural heritage and a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting it for future generations.
